November 2006:
Ever since we moved into the house in Pompano we have looked at the
lighthouse at the Hillsboro Inlet and told ourselves "we gotta go there
one day". Well a couple of weekends ago the Lighthouse Society opened
the lighthouse to the public. Transport to and from the lighthouse was
provided by one of the local scuba diving boats.

|
We were on the first ride to
the lighthouse and headed straight to the lighthouse itself to climb the
175 steps to the observation level. . |
 |
 |
Cuzncindy did fine climbing the
steps but she doesn't do high edges well. It looks like she is smiling
but really she is gritting her teeth and muttering "hurry up and take
the picture!" |

|
The day was cool, the sun was
shining and the sea was almost dead flat and clear. To the north of the
lighthouse is the Hillsboro Club where we have had several very restful
weekends attending Cuzncindy's office retreats. |

This mechanism turns the lens
which casts a very bright beam of light not only out to sea to aid local
ships but also into the nearby houses and condominiums every 20 seconds,
day and night.
|
|
For a while between the
demolition of the house next door and until the walls of the new house
went up our bedroom was one of those that was being lit up every 20
seconds. |

|
Back at ground level we
wandered around the Coast Guard base. These cottages are used by the
Coast Guard for rest and recreation.
