Today at about 2:00 pm our power was restored. By 3:00 we had the new generator and extension cords put away and were sitting in air conditioned luxury watching the news reports of Katrina making for New Orleans. Wind speeds here were 80 mph. The forecast is for 160+ mph when it makes for land fall. That means wind pressures that are 4 times those in Florida!

Hurricane Katrina aftermath. Yesterday Cuzncindy decided we couldn't live without our own generator so now we have one. The up side is we have both refrigerators going which means not only the food is going to be ok but the beer is cold too. Even better as far as Cuzncindy is concerned is a neighbor offered us the use of a portable air conditioner which is now blowing cold air into the bedroom.

There are more generators in the neighborhood than last year which means a lot of noise. The power is still out but FPL know about the leaning pole at the end of our street and this is apparently bad enough to put us higher on their priority list. So maybe today ...

The hurricane has passed and we are ok.

The power went out at about 7:00 Thursday evening just as the wind started picking up. One of the joys of living in an old part of town with old power distribution. The worst of the wind occurred last night. This morning we woke up to cloudy skies and very breezy and no air conditioning which made one of us very cranky.

We spent the morning cleaning up the broken tree branches and palm fronds. Now all we have to do is wait for the electricity company to come and fix the two power lines that are down and the broken power pole at the end of the street.

Things got a lot better this afternoon when our neighbor Alan let us plug in an extension cord to his generator. So now we have a refrigerator running, a few lights, internet access and coffee in the morning.

Hurricane Katrina is now a category one storm. The western eye wall has made land fall south of us. The center of the eye is 16 miles south east of us. The wind speed at the airport 3/4 mile inland from us is showing sustained wind of 50 mph.

The good news for us is the storm wobbled a little south of us and we still have electricity. The weather guessers are saying the back side of the storm looks like it will be wetter and windier than the side we have just seen.

Tropical storm Katrina is now 37 miles directly east of us. We have brought all the patio furniture inside. It has been raining lightly for a couple hours now and the wind is starting to pick up.

The weather guessers are predicting landfall sometime early this evening.

Tropical Storm Katrina is 185 miles from our house. Here we go again.

The computer models are predicting Katrina will turn during the night and will take aim at our house! I am desperately hoping the computers are wrong.

Trivia: today is the 13th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew which was the first named storm of 1992.
